Shure SM7B Mic Review / Test

Watch updated review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1blmOQ0FlBQ
Today I review my daily driver, one of the best broadcast dynamic microphones on the market, the Shure SM7b. It’s hands down my favorite mic and has been used on H3H3 Productions Podcast, WTF! With Marc Maron, The Joe Rogan Experience, and many more.

CORRECTION: SM57/SM58 Frequency Response is 50Hz - 15kHz, as opposed to SM7b's 50Hz -20kHz

David Handy : Ya know it's gonna be good when it comes with the microphone in the box...
Henry : The Background Noise Test is really impressive. Blocks out sound really well compare to other dynamic mics from today.
OneFlash : Did you used an expander/gate , ore noise removal plugin for the audio? I see that you have 0 noise floor in the video's sound.
NW : This is my dream mic. I'll get it one day, but it's a luxury for sure. My SM57 is doing the job for now and with a wind screen sounds pretty close to the SM7B.
The SM7B would go perfect with my setup though.

Thanks for the review bandrew!

Ruairidh Mason : I wish this guy did every single tutorial on YouTube.
chrisrnz : Probably one of the most informative, down-to-earth and just plain "understandable" explanation/tutorial style vids out there. Everything I needed to know in one video, after watching about 50 other crappy ones. Thanks Mitch and Sweetwater!
Chris Wood : The SM7B is an excellent dynamic mic for recording in environments that haven’t been acoustically treated, as well as in studio. This is why you see a lot of podcasters and streamers use this mic: you sound great while the mic rejects a lot of the room noise.

If you’re thinking of using this mic for professional Voice Over, I would caution against over-relying on the proximity effect to make yourself sound more resonant. Producers and engineers know it when they hear it. But if you’re banging out a quick audition in your bedroom or on-the-go, it’s a great microphone to have in your arsenal.
I am Steve Tay : For the streamer and podcaster settings: 5:20
- Leave the windscreen on
- Get close to the mic when speaking, about an inch (2.5 cm) away
- Bass roll off set flat
- Midrange enhance switch - In the flat position it will make your voice sound smoother. In the enhanced position it will help your voice cut through a little bit more.

Note: You need an inline preamp with this microphone. Recommend inline preamps:
- Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator
- sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite 1-Channel Active Inline Preamp
- Royer Labs dBooster In-Line Signal Booster
- Soyuz The Launcher Inline Active Preamp
- Radial McBoost
