In this video, I'll be covering the work of designers Phoebe Philo and Hedi Slimane for Celine- a brand that strives to deliver garments that are not only fashionable but made for living. I'll be breaking down the brand identity and dismantling the "Old Céline" vs "New Celine" argument by explaining each of the designer's approaches to the integrity of the house's historical roots.
To do this, I'll create clarity around the interpretations that communicate concepts within each designer’s niche of imagery. Along with this, I'll also be defining the elements that give the house it's abstemious, sophisticated, and freedom driven luxury that has withstood the test of time to modern-day under all designers who have contributed to the Celine narrative to form the ideals of the house.

Gio Mendoza : I remember reading an interview of Phoebe where she said that Celine never really had an iconic silhouette or style (ex. Dior's Bar Jacket or Chanel's Tweed Jacket) which gave her freedom and led her to create her own identity in the brand. It's just interesting how Hedi would reference looks from the 70s where Phoebe did not, showing both designers' opposing perspectives. Then again, on a business perspective, Hedi really brings in the cash wherever he goes. Philo's Celine is aesthetically and luxuriously better, but still super expensive. Was the brand actually making money especially on the clothes during Phoebe's era?
