In this week's episode I discuss my initial thoughts after testing the Atlas Packs Athlete Backpack. I've only had an opportunity to use this photography backpack for a short time, but it has quickly become one of my favorite camera bags I've testing in 2018 and has me wondering, is this the best mirrorless camera bag?

David Petroski : I used this pack for my trip to Yosemite. On my long day I carried my camera and 3 lenses along with water, food and clothes. Our hike was 17 miles so I was wearing the pack for about 10 hours over some very rough terrain. It was extremely comfortable and handles weight very well. I still had space for additional gear if I decided on an over-night trip. The big part is that it does not look like a camera bag. For traveling it does fit under a plane seat. The pack is expensive but since it can expand or contract to a smaller bag, it is like having several size packs. Also, as the video said, all accessories come with the pack so it is less expensive in the long run. Bomb proof and well thought out.
John Leon-Guerrero : The bag looks like a workhorse and I'd consider grabbing one. My only source of discontent is the emblazoned large logos everywhere on the bag. I mean there's not enough gaffers tape to cover the logo on the outside or inside. A simple A on center or corner in my opinion would be a more aesthetically minimalistic approach.
Ron Duckworth : Mark, I have greatly enjoyed your reviews of camera backpacks. They have been informative and helpful to me. Most camera backpacks are good at holding camera gear but have no thought put into carrying the other stuff outdoor/nature, etc photographers need to carry. On the basis of your review of the Atlas Athlete I was about to pull the trigger on purchasing one but by pure chance I have came across another brand I had not heard that appears to be out of Europe, NYA-EVO (https://www.nya-evo.com/). It appears to resolve some of the shortcomings of the Shimoda's lack of a place for a water bottle, etc. This might be a bag you may want to look at doing a review of. This You-Tube video from a photographer in the United Kingdom is very praise worthy of it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ71Ouhk8vM.
Pitesh Mistry : Great video Mark! I've been on the lookout for a while for a larger sized backpack that can hold other gear including the camera gear I have. I'm very tempted now to get this bag, thanks for the review :)
AtlasPacks : Hey Mark. Awesome first look and initial overview of the Athlete Pack. A few things of note:

1. Loved that you started with the non-camera gear sections of the pack. Crazy to think that no other camera bag companies make camera bags with enough room for non-camera gear. The front section of the pack can expand up to 30 liters. The camera core sections measures about 10 liters (with the Origami Pocket in the open position).
2. As Mark mentioned the pack comes in two size heights. A regular and a tall. You can also select from 3 different size waist belts. Details on which size pack and belt will work best for your build is on our site.
3. Also glad you mentioned the depth of the pack - this is very important. **On the Athlete Pack gripped bodies must be placed in flat (or the grip removed). Bodies such as a 5D or D850 also fit and can be stored with lenses mounted. This pack is by no exclusive to mirrorless systems. It will easily hold a Sony FS5 (broken down) or the Canon 1DX
4. Thx for the kind words on the dividers. I spent a lot of time grinding to get them just right :-).
----------- ----- --- --- --

PS: I'm noticing more and more people taking the frame out. I've also had a number of requests from taller customers about letting them switch out to a shorter size frame. Over the past few weeks I've been testing this setup in my personal pack and have become a fan as well (especially when I travel).  Of note.... There is a small downside as the top of the frame no longer tucks into the little flaps on the inside of the pack (b/c it's shorter). Overall not a big deal but wanted to make people aware.

PSS: If anyone is interested I would be happy to make a custom height frame for your pack at no additional charge --> But you must provide me with insight and feedback regarding how the frame performs and functions.

Cheers and thanks,
Allan
